Apple just announced the Vision Pro. They call it a ‘spatial computer’, but it’s pretty much an AR/VR headset.
So what do I love about it?
might be superior movie watching experience if I’m by myself, also great tool to more generally tune out the world
great for long flights
maybe a better video call experience for chatting to family?
maybe will give the sense of a bigger screen if working away from my desk?
and most importantly: will make me feel a bit more like Tom Cruise in Minority Report with all the hand gesture swiping.
What I don’t like about it:
I’m actively trying to spend less time on my phone/devices. Strapping a computer to my head kinda feels like moving in the wrong direction.
Watching family moments back in 3D seems really cool, until I realise it would mean strapping the Vision Pro to my head in the moment to capture it. I can’t imagine ever wanting to wear it to capture a big moment like my daughter taking her first steps. I imagine you’ll be the same.
The video shows a mom saying hi to her daughter whilst wearing the headset (see picture below). And emphasises it’s a great way to not be isolated from other people. But is it though? The ‘eyes’ that shine through the display are actually just projected on there, so your loved ones are still talking to essentially a video display version of you.
Folks wearing Google Glass all those years ago were called ‘glassholes’, I’m not sure if the Vision Pro will dodge that association (it’s so much bigger!). I’d feel a bit uncomfortable wearing it in public. It’s like I’m actively signalling I’m someplace else and wanting to be isolated from my environment.
For work I don’t think it’ll change much, if anything. I don’t see corporates move away from Zoom/Teams to “Facetime” anytime soon.
And for legal work? Having more ‘screen real estate’ is always welcome, I hate not having my extra screens if I’m working away from the office. So it could be a space efficient solution to that.
Beyond that? I’ll let Alex Herrity’s perfect meme do the talking!
Thanks for being here,
Daniel
